MapmyIndia in-car GPS navigation launched

India’s premier navigable map data provider MapmyIndia has launched an in-car GPS navigation application.

A report said that the portable satellite-connected GPS gadget is pre-loaded with comprehensive maps for all of India. It is also said to be able to provide real time voice-guided turn-by-turn navigation for seamless travel across the country, be it intra-city or inter-city.

After the roll out of the in-car GPS navigation, the company now plans to pump in an additional $5 million for sales and distribution. MapmyIndia has already invested $5 million in building the most comprehensive and detailed maps of India. The new invention hopes to replicate the success of in-car GPS navigation applications abroad.

Quoting figures, a report said that sales of 20 million Personal Navigation Devices were recorded in 2006, in the US. In the European market recorded sales of 30 million devices. MapmyIndia plans to invest in constant upgrades of the maps during 2008.

The new system boasts of real-time, turn-by-turn map, and voice guidance. It also keeps the driver informed where he is and in which direction he is headed. Apart from these features, distance and estimated time to next turn and final destination, quick search to find and navigate to urgent points of interest along the way, instant auto re-routing in case of road blocks, and an address book to store destination details are loaded into this application.
