Arijit Banerjee

Thursday, October 12, 2006 (New Delhi):

People in India may be able to locate their homes on Google Earth, but now a desi website can help them find their way anywhere in the country at the click of a mouse.

Digital map companies are now getting into the act, and mapmyindia.com promises detailed maps of every part of the country. These include locations roads, localities, restaurants, shops and ATMs.

The company has also tied up with mobile operators like MTNL and Airtel to make the service available to people while they are on the move.

The MTNL service is SMS-based, while that on Airtel is based on GPRS.

MapmyIndia assures that their maps don't violate any security norms with most strategic locations either missing from their maps or being shown slightly out of alignment from their actual positions.

After mobile operators, the company is also trying to tie up with navigation companies to provide car navigation services.
